Carolyn Naiman
Artist Statement:
In my attempt to depict abstract forms of nature, I have discovered that nature is not solely visible to the eye, it also includes the inner ruminations of our souls. We have our own, quite personal and extraordinary, inner landscapes. My hope is to encourage the viewer to look within, and break free from the outside constructs we use to define ourselves.
Biography:
Largely influenced by the color field movement, Naiman began exploring the atmospheric effects of vast expanses of color. She became particularly interested in color relationships and how color stimulates the inner emotional landscape. By 2005, Naiman changed her approach from the non-objective to a more literal approach to the landscape. Her goal was to capture the mood provoking elements of the color field artists with the mystical qualities of earlier schools of landscape painters such as the Hudson River School artists, the Barbizon artists and the Tonalists. Although still abstract in approach, Naiman’s intention is to depict the landscape as a luminous, and awe-inspiring force that she believes has a tremendous impact on our inner experiences and how we relate to the world around us.

2000-2002 Otis School of Art & Design
1996- 1998 Antioch University: MA Clinical Psychology
1989-1992 New York University: BFA Visual Arts
